Parade Opens LaBelle's MLK Blvd.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day In Hendry

LABELLE, FL. -- Hendry county and the city of LaBelle celebrated the third Monday of January 2011, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with a parade and ribbon cutting to celebrate not only the MLK holiday, but the opening of the newly revamped MLK Boulevard in LaBelle.

The city street has been in bad shape for many years, and finally adequate sidewalks along the west side of the street, drainage culverts, and a vehicle turning lane have been completed on the nearly one-mile long road running from State Road 80 on the north of LaBelle to Cowboy Way on the south side.

Marchers, organized by community leader Nora Fagin, proudly walked and sang along the new road beginning at Cowboy Way all the way to Miller Avenue, and ended at Alton "Kid" Jones Park in the Fordson-Sunset Park neighborhood, where refreshments by Jonesez BBQ and many musical performances were scheduled for the celebration.

Officials in attendance for the parade and day in the park included Mayor Paul Puletti, cutting the ribbon for the street opening, Sheriff Steve Whidden, Chief Deputy Kevin Nelson, Tax Appraiser Phil Pelletier, and Rev. Bill Maddox, Jr.
