LABELLE, FL. -- In a hotly contested race, Hendry County Commissioner Janet Taylor was selected to represent Florida at the National Democratic Convention to be held September 3-6 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Taylor was chosen at the Florida Democratic Party Convention held June 1-3 in Tampa where party representatives from all 67 counties gathered to select their 300-member national convention delegation. The Florida Democratic delegation is so large that only California will have more of the 5,500 delegates at the event.

By contrast, while Florida is hosting the Republican Party convention, its delegation will be considerably smaller due to being penalized by the Republican National Party for jumping its primary too far ahead of other states.

Taylor said that the Tampa convention was very exciting and she's honored to be representing Democrats from Hendry and Glades Counties at the national level. She said it's been an incredibly busy time for her having just come back from a trip to Christian sites in Israel and the graduation of a granddaughter in Mississippi.

Commissioner Taylor was selected in part because of her status as an elected county official and senior citizen. Seniors will be crucial to Democratic hopes in the November presidential and senatorial elections.

Highlight of the convention was a speech by U.S. Senator Bill Nelson who said Florida is the crucial state. In a replay of the 2000 election, whichever party wins Florida will lead the nation for the next four years.

Also attending the Florida Democratic Party Convention for Hendry County was Joe Thomas and for Glades County, John Capece. Hendry and Glades Democrats will gather for a Unity Dinner fundraiser on June 16 at the Clewiston Country Club.
