Panther Program In LaBelle

Panther Research to Be Presented At Audubon Program
LABELLE, FL. -- Hendry-Glades Audubon invites everyone to a free Florida Panther program on Monday September 10 at 7 p. m. at the Cooperative Extension, Dallas Townsend Building 1085 Pratt Blvd. in LaBelle.

Caitlin Jacobs, MS candidate, Dept. Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, UF-IFAS will present her research on the” Florida Panther and Calf Mortality”. The Florida panther is the only puma population currently found in the eastern United States.

While in the 1980’s the population was thought to be as low as 20-30 individuals, recent conservation efforts have resulted in an estimated population of 100-160 panthers. This population growth has placed panthers in closer proximity to humans and ranch lands.

Caitlin Jacobs’ research includes the real and perceived impacts of panthers on calf mortality, indentifies suitable panther habitat, and information about programs to provide panther habitat.
