8-Year Old Seriously Injured - Swamp Buggy Overturns

Driver Charged In Rural Crash

CLEWISTON, FL. -- A Saturday crash in Hendry county left an 8-year old girl in serious condition as a swamp buggy overturns. A second child, age 6 had minor injuries.

A 1975 homemade swamp buggy was southbound on Quebrada Street at Avenida Del Sur in the rural community  of Montura Ranches in central Hendry county as driver Berta Norma Gonzalez, 50 of Miami proceeded to make a left turn (west) onto an access road.

She lost control and as a result departed the roadway and overturned in a ditch. The two children, Dayana Cruz and David Cardona were taken to Hendry Regional Hospital in Clewiston, Fl. They were visiting from Miami and West Palm Beach.


Gonzalez was charged with Careless Driving and Vehicle not Registered. It is illegal to drive on streets in an unregistered vehicle. None in the buggy were wearing seatbelts.
