CLEWISTON, FL. -- On Sunday, December 26, 2015, at approximately 5:00 pm, Hendry County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant at the address of 435 S. Utopia, Clewiston, in the Montura Ranch Estates community, a rural area in central Hendry County.
Hendry County Sheriffs Deputies with the assistance from the Florida Agricultural Criminal Intelligence Unit (FACIU) deputies from Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Palm Beach County, Florida Wildlife Commission and the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Air Support unit, arrested 48 men.
During the raid Saturday, law enforcement and animal control officers found 83 caged roosters. There was a full-scale fighting ring set up inside an illegally built structure on the property.
Of those arrested very few were from Hendry County; most were from Dade, Collier, Lee, Hillsborough and Palm Beach County and ranging from 21 to 86 years of age.
All those arrested were charged with Fighting and Baiting, a 3rd Degree Felony, and released on $3,500 bond.
